Paw Protect vs ManyPets: What do the plans cover?

Paw Protect and ManyPets cover pretty much any unexpected accident or illness that your furry friend might experience. They cover breed-specific, congenital or genetic conditions, plus chronic, preventable and orthopedic issues. 

Some common things covered by both plans are:

Paw Protect and ManyPets both include vet exam fees for accidents and illness (typically it costs $80-120 for a vet exam fee). 

Paw Protect also has a really handy 24/7 pet telehealth service, called Paw Support. This is great if you need advice about a pet health concern in the middle of the night when your vet is closed. ManyPets does not offer a pet telehealth service. 

Complementary services, such as acupuncture or chiropractic care, are covered by both insurers, but only Paw Protect insures for behavioral treatment.

Finally, if you travel with your pet there are differences too. With Paw Protect you’ll be covered anywhere in the world for up to six months, whereas with ManyPets you’ll be covered within the US only.

Do Paw Protect and ManyPets have a wellness plan?

Paw Protect offers a Wellness Rewards plan as an optional extra. It helps you to help pay for those predictable expenses, such as routine wellness exams, vaccinations, grooming, spaying and neutering, dental cleaning, plus flea, tick and heartworm treatments. 

You can select from $250, $450 or $650 of annual coverage and, if you use all the benefits, it will save you money each year. Wellness Rewards is offered as a supplementary, non-insurance benefit administered by Embrace Pet Insurance Agency in the United States. Wellness Rewards is not available in Rhode Island.

ManyPets’ wellness plan delivers up to $150 of coverage for each category of preventative care, including routine wellness visits, parasite prevention, dental cleanings, plus vitamins and supplements.

Paw Protect vs ManyPets: What are the coverage limits?

Paw Protect has annual limit options of $5,000, $10,000 and Unlimited, which gives you more flexibility when budgeting your monthly premium. You can alter the coverage every year at renewal time.

ManyPets offers Unlimited annual coverage as standard.

Paw Protect vs ManyPets: Deductibles

When it comes to deductibles (the amount you pay towards claims before the insurance kicks in), ManyPets only offers $500 per year. Paw Protect has a choice of $100, $250 and $500. 

Both insurers only charge one deductible in each annual insurance period, not for every claim. In addition, Paw Protect offers a $50 deductible discount for each claim-free year. ManyPets doesn’t do this. 

What are Paw Protect and ManyPets’ reimbursement percentage options?

Paw Protect offers three reimbursement choices – you can claim back 70%, 80% or 90% of the treatment costs (after the deductible). ManyPets offers 70% and 80%. The less the insurer pays, the lower your monthly premium will be.

Do Paw Protect and ManyPets have any exclusions?

Pet insurance generally does not cover pre-existing conditions, although both Paw Protect and ManyPets have tried to address this issue.

Paw Protect will cover some curable, pre-existing conditions if the pet goes 12 months without any symptoms or treatment. With ManyPets it’s 18 months.

ManyPets insurance doesn’t cover hip dysplasia in pets older than six years of age at enrollment. So, if you rescue a senior pet or enroll your dog later in life, they won’t be covered for this condition. 

Paw Protect covers this condition on all accident and illness policies, no matter the age of the pet at enrolment, as long as it isn’t pre-existing.

Neither policy covers regular preventative care, but this can be added via both insurers’ routine wellness plans. Unlike Paw Protect, ManyPets does not insure behavioral therapy, or internal/external parasites.

How expensive are Paw Protect and ManyPets?

Both these new insurers offer a good combination of coverage and cost, giving you the option to select different levels of cover and co-insurance, to manage the monthly costs to suit you.

Neither is the cheapest option available, but both are strong performers when it comes to value for money.

Paw Protect vs ManyPets: How quickly are claims paid?

How quickly you get your claim paid back is a really important part of an insurance policy, and Paw Protect looks to pay out accident and illness claims within 10-15 days and wellness claims within five days.

ManyPets says on its website that it aims to process claims in under 48 hours, although if more information is required from your vet this can take a bit longer. Once the claim is approved, it says reimbursement happens within 24 hours, although this is not a guarantee.

Do Paw Protect and ManyPets offer any discounts?

Paw Protect offers a 5% discount for active or former members of the military (though not in New York or Tennessee), plus a generous 10% discount if you are insuring two or more pets. 

ManyPets doesn’t offer any discounts. 

Paw Protect vs ManyPets: Standard waiting periods

For Paw Protect there is a two-week illness waiting period which begins on your policies’ effective date. Orthopedic conditions have additional waiting or exclusion periods that vary by state.

ManyPets’ waiting period is 15 days for both accidents and injuries, although these waiting periods go down to just 24 hours if you’re switching to ManyPets from another insurer. 

Do Paw Protect and ManyPets’ plans include behavioral treatments?

Paw Protect covers behavioral treatments, but ManyPets doesn’t. 

Paw Protect vs ManyPets: Is there a maximum age for enrollment?

Paw Protect is limited to 5 years of age for new enrollments to accident and illness plans, although dogs over that age can have an accident-only plan. ManyPets has a maximum enrollment age of 14.
